Precious - Movie Review (Spoiler Free)
"Why me?" That's what the title character, Precious, in the film wrote in her journal at one time and honestly, that's how you feel when you're watching the movie. When watching the movie, I felt like I did when watching Pursuit of Happyness with Will Smith: No matter what she did for herself to better her life, something always happened to bring her back further than where she came from.
That's okay though because the film was great. Even with the depressing story, there was an equally effective use of humor that helped to balance the film out. Even in the most depressing moments in the movie, something would happen that would cause you to laugh...sometimes hysterically.
What's it about? A teenage girl growing up in Harlem in 1987 pregnant with her second child BY HER FATHER while living in a home with an abusive mother. That's as much as I want to give away since most of which you can clearly see from the trailer and this IS a spoiler free review.
One must really commend the acting of all of the lead females in the film. Gabourey Sidibe, or Precious, was very impressive in her acting debut. I would have sworn that at times she had been in the acting game for years.
Mo'Nique. I was impressed. It was really good to see her step out of the role of a comedian for a second to show that she could really be a force to reckon with in other roles as well. I was upset with Mary (Mo'Nique). At times, to the point where I was almost disgusted with seeing her appear on the screen, but all that shows is that she did her job.
Paula Patton, who's character was Ms. Blu Rain, wasn't necessarily the best in the film, but she definitely stepped up her game since she was in the film Mirrors where I thought her acting was horrid.
And finally Mrs. Mariah Carey. As the welfare social worker, Mrs. Weiss, when she first came on the screen, I literally said "damn" aloud. If that is what she looks like without makeup, then dear Lord, but at no point during her performance did I think of Mariah the singer because she actually dug deep for the role IN THIS MOVIE (we will not speak of Glitter). When she came on the screen, I saw a questionably white New York native social worker, accent and all.
Sherri Shepard was also in the movie, but I really don't see her as someone worth mentioning more than this...
Would I recommend the film? Um, do I really have to answer that? Go see the movie. Its going to make you sad. You might even tear up or cry. That's ok. Even through all of the tears that you see shed in the film and the tears that many may shed in the theater, you realize that the message of the film is to hold tight to your dreams and never give up hope for every moment is precious.
4.5/5 stars (I wouldn't say its a perfect movie, but the closest we've had to one in a long time)

Also in this sprawling film where several actors play several roles are the McCarthy-era closet case Roy Cohn, the accused Communist spy Ethel Rosenberg, Louis's new lover Joe Pitt (Wilson), his mother Hanna (Streep, who also plays an elderly Rabbi), his wife Harper (Parker) and a enormous rather mystified angel played by Emma Thompson who also plays a Brooklyn accented nurse and a homeless woman. Perhaps the supporting player who most stands out is Jeffrey Wright who stars not only as a very gay nurse, but also as a guide in Harper's fantasies. Yes, the film is filled with fantasies -- so many we couldn't share them all here -- in fact, we wouldn't dare.

In 1981 Kansas, eight-year-olds Neil McCormick (Chase Ellison) and Brian Lackey (George Webster) are sexually abused by their baseball coach (Bill Sage).
